Ladies’ Day Dress with Tied-Up Hem. Also known as a walking dress or dress worn for sport or croquet. This pattern is for a day dress with internal ties inside the skirt meant to elevate the hem when tied together to show the petticoat underneath. View A was copied from an original in the author’s collection. View A and B have the same bodice with only the skirt being different. The dress has a bodice with a front opening which can be closed with buttons or hooks and eyes. It has a one-inch standing collar. The back bodice has a tuck taken from the armhole curving to the waist. The armholes and waist are piped. The sleeves are two-piece in the “coat” style. The front of the bodice has two darts to the waist on each side which can be boned. The bodice is directly attached to the skirt only at the back of the bodice. The skirt front has an attached waistband which is separate from the bodice and is attached to the bodice with hooks and eyes. The bodice opens at the front completely to the sides. The skirt opens from the waist at the side seam on the left for about 8 inches and closes at the waist. The waist has a watchpocket at the front waistband that can be accessed from the outside of the skirt. The skirt has a circumference of 160 inches at the hem and has a waist of 102 inches before pleating. The pleating takes the top circumference down to the waist measurement by size. There is an option of a large skirt pocket to be inserted in the right side side of the skirt. The skirt has inverted box pleats at the waist. View A skirt length is controlled at the sides, and in front and back at the top. The skirt is 42 inches long in front and four inches longer in back, for a back
length of 46 inches. The difference is so that it can be worn over any hoop that is longer in back then the front, such as an elliptical hoop. The skirt can be worn over an even round hoop with the back training or instructions on how to shorten the back. View A skirt has two rectangular pieces at front and back and two gored pieces at each side. View A has three pairs of tapes on each side on the inside to elevate the hem on the sides when tied together; more in the middle of the three. There are instructions on how to add more tapes if desired, at the front and back. View A and View B differ only in the skirt. View B has the same bodice as View A. The View B skirt is designed so that the border printed, horizontally striped or fabric that is embroidered along the selvage edge can be used without distortion. This skirt is also 42 inches at the front and 46 inches at the back. The length is controlled at the top. The pattern pieces are two large pieces with a front and back that have one seam at each side. The skirt has 4 large darts at the top of the skirt in front and back to reduce the waist to 102 inches like View A. These darts facilitate the four pairs of tapes on each side, distributed evenly around the skirt for a total of eight pairs to elevate the hem evenly. Both View A and B have the options of a straight hem or scalloped. There are two different pleating schemes for both skirts provided in templates: One for an even distribution of fabric around the waist, and one having more fabric in the back to accommodate an elliptical hoop. Both skirts have a 2 inch fold over at the waist. The dress can be completely lined or the hem faced. Hem tape can be added to the straight hem. There are additional pattern pieces for an undersleeve. There are optional chest pads. The pattern includes templates for ribbon trim on bo
